Engineering Value Optimisation and Constructability
Value engineering should not mean indiscriminate cost reduction. A useful review compares each option against safety, compliance, performance, capacity, resilience, capital cost, energy, maintenance, programme and future flexibility.
Start with measurable criteria
The team should confirm loads, diversity, environmental conditions, redundancy, duty points and operational needs before testing alternatives. Recommendations need transparent assumptions and an impact statement across affected disciplines.
Review constructability in the model and documents
Plant access, service routes, structural openings, ceiling congestion, valve access, replacement paths and construction sequencing can be reviewed through coordinated drawings and BIM. Decisions should be recorded so approved value changes remain traceable.
